Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why do I get some "Warning: Conflict ***" messages?

A: DirSync uses file time to distinguish the change of a file. Some software will change a file but let the file time untouched. In this case, you can set the sync mode to "Restore ***" to get these files copied.

Q: The program is memory consuming during the execution of jobs and lead to "Out of Resource" error sometimes. How can I solve it?

A: For the large directory structures with hundreds of thousands of files, you'd better set the Perform Sync Action (in Misc Page) to After a scan of each folder.

Q: How to access the network resources for DirSync Server running in Service mode?

A: There are two methods that can be used to access remote network resources for DirSync Service:

(1) Configure DirSync Service to run under a user account that has enough rights. Better use UNC (\\computername\sharename\foldername) to access the network resource because the service runs on a different logon session with the users' (even use same user account).

(2) Write pre/post-sync batch command files to map/unmap network drives. e.g.:

Set the Pre-Sync Command and Post-Sync Command to "map.bat" and "unmap.bat" respectively.

The contents of "map.bat" will be:

net use Y: \\ComputerName\Share Password /user:UserName

The contents of "unmap.bat" will be:

net use Y: /delete

Note:

The UserName and Password is specific to the share folder of the target computer.

Storing the password in a text file is not very secure!

Q: How to run a script file in Pre-Sync or Post-Sync command?

A: To run a VBScript (*.vbs), JScript (*.js) or Windows Script Host file (*.wsh, *.wsf), please use one of the following command lines:

WScript.exe filename.vbs

CScript.exe filename.vbs

Note: WScript generates graphical window output, while CScript sends its output to the command window.

Q: How to backup to a CD-RW/DVD+RW/DVD-RW?

A: To backup to a CD-RW/DVD+RW/DVD-RW, a "packet writing program" must be installed on the computer.

e.g.: Nero's InCD is a good choice. It lets you copy files to a CD-RW/DVD+RW/DVD-RW disk directly from the Windows Explorer. Therefore DirSync can access your disk too.

Q: How to make default job settings and where is the "*** Defaults" buttons of previous version 2?

A: They are removed from the Job Properties dialog box. If you want to make some special job definitions as defaults, please just create a null job and use copy/paste to create new one.

Q: What is the system requirement?

A: You will need a Pentium 100 PC or higher, 32MB RAM or more. The operating system should be Microsoft Windows 98, ME, NT4, 2000, XP, 2003 or more.
